John Williams, 72, of Salem, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born on April 15, 1953, in Pana, IL, to Charles “Stick” and Wanda (Eagan) Williams. He was raised in Pana, where he spent most of his life before moving to Salem three years ago. He graduated from Pana High School in 1971.
On a summer day in 1973, John married Patricia Spannagel at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Strasburg, Illinois.
John was a hardworking man who dedicated many years to Pana Greenhouse, Air Conditioned Roses, and, later, to ADM as a welder for several subcontractors. He took pride in providing for his family and showing up every day with strength and determination.
More than anything, John loved his family. He found his greatest joy in being a dad and grandpa, “papa.” Whether he was watching his beloved Illini or cheering on the Chicago Cubs, out on the golf course, or at the bowling alley, he proudly bowled several perfect 300 games. He also had a deep passion for men’s fast-pitch softball, spending years pitching and coaching, sharing his love of the game with others.
A favorite part of John’s daily routine was his early morning breakfasts at the local restaurant, Bonnie’s Cafe, where he enjoyed coffee, conversation, and plenty of laughter with “the guys.” Those simple moments meant a lot to him and became a cherished tradition. He also enjoyed taking walks with his dog, Winston, another simple joy that brought him peace and happiness. As well as cheering on his grandkid’s sports and other activities.
John will be remembered for his gift of gab, his love of sports, and the way he showed up for his family in both big and small ways.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his daughters: Ashley (Stephen Holmes), Abbey (Ricardo Salgado), and Chelsey (Michael Weber). He was a proud grandfather to Reese, Rory, and Gage Holmes of Nixa, Missouri; Emeree, Paislee, and Corbin Giles of Salem; Hunter Williams of Pana; and Tobias Weber of Oconee. He also leaves behind step-grandchildren Ricardo Jr. and Angel Salgado of Salem, and Jocelynn Weber of Pana, all of whom brought him great pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pamela Martincic, and nephew, Kyle Martincic, all of whom he loved dearly.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing he is at peace. His love will live on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished so deeply.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Pana Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Shawn Martincic. He will be laid to rest at Linwood Cemetery in Pana. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the service time in the church.
Memorials in John’s honor may be made to Pana Diamonds Club or the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. They will be accepted by McCracken-Dean Funeral Home, which is assisting the family.
