Georgine Hawley, 83, of Centralia, IL, passed away at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia on January 20, 2026, at 7:25 pm. Georgine was born on January 15, 1943, the daughter of Gerald S. Hawley and Vivian L. (Jannett) Hawley. She married Raymond Monken, but later divorced. She was united in marriage to Donald R. May on April 15, 1995.
She is survived by her sister, Jannett Hawley, and her husband, Harold “Fred” F. Smith, Jr., of Centralia.
Georgine graduated from Centralia Township High School, Centralia Junior College, McKendree University with a BA degree, and Eastern Illinois University with a Master’s degree. She taught English and Literature at Rend Lake College for 33 years. Georgine was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Centralia. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Egyptian Gateway #76, serving as a Chaplain. She was a member of many organizations and a supporter of the Arts.
Georgine was preceded in death by her father, Gerald S. Hawley; her mother, Vivian L. (Jannett) Hawley; and her husband, Donald R. May.
Per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and there will be no services. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Centralia and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home located at 235 North Sycamore Street, Centralia, Illinois 62801, (618)532-3523, who is honored to be of service to Georgine’s Family.
