Mayor Butch Mathus told the Wamac Board of Alderman Monday night that an estimated 250 attended the Wamac Fun Day that raised $3,000 for equipment for the police department. Mathus says they will hold another family fun day next year.
The Wamac Board agreed to begin demolition proceedings on seven unsightly homes. Three homes on Dover Street and one each on 15th, 16th, 17th and Apple Street will be turned over to the court system. The owners of mobile homes on Chicago and St. Louis Streets have been given notice to clean up their property. Mathus wants the community to know the city is working on the derelict building problem, but it may take a while to get through the court system.
Mathus warned water rates will be going up. Wamac has been notified by Centralia that the cost of water to Wamac will go up 18-cents a gallon. Mathus says Wamac cannot afford to absorb the increase. A decision on a water rate hike for residents is expected to be made next month.
The board approved a $65,000 motor fuel tax budget for this summer’s oil and chip and road improvement program.
The board voted to donate a Ford Explorer squad car no longer in use to the Centralia Emergency Services and Disaster Agency. Mathus says the donation is a thank you for all the organization does for Wamac.
