The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved a stipulated agreement to install new automated warning devices and other public safety improvements at three Marion County railroad crossings.

The projects include Edgar Road near Kinmundy, Laughman Road near Alma, and West Line Road near Odin.  All work is supposed to be completed within 18 months.

The total estimated cost of the signal design and installations is $1,512,762.

ICC staff recommended the Grade Crossing Protection Fund pay for 95-percent of the cost.  The Illinois Central Railway Company will pay the remaining five percent as well as for all future maintenance costs for the signals and circuitry.

The total estimated cost to improve the existing highway approaches is $829,000, 100-percent of which will be covered by the Grade Crossing Protection Fund.  The local township road districts will be responsible for future maintenance costs at the highway approaches.
