A 39-year-old Mt. Vernon man was killed following a two-vehicle crash Monday night on Interstate 57 at milepost 96 on the north side of Mt. Vernon
State Police say Charles Whipps was traveling northbound when he struck the rear of a car driven by 25-year-old Samantha Marshall of Elkhart, Indiana. The impact caused the Marshall vehicle to run off the roadway into a ditch. Whipps continued traveling northbound on Interstate 57 on the right shoulder before overturning about a half-mile north of the original accident scene and coming to a stop in the median.
Jefferson Fire Protection District Officials say Whipps was ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Marshall and a passenger in her car, 51-year-old Christine Bradburn of Elkhart, Indiana, escaped injury.
The crash occurred at 7:40 Monday night. One of the northbound lanes was closed following the crash until the investigation and cleanup were completed.
