A 34-year-old Vernon man who has been arrested for residential burglary, possession of 5 to 15 grams of meth, and receiving stolen property since being placed on Marion County Drug Court has now been sentenced to ten years in prison.
Judge Mark Stedelin handed down the sentence to Marcus Hicks of Fayette Road on Wednesday when he appeared before him on the multiple charges. Ten year sentences to be served concurrently were handed down on both the petition to revoke the drug court probation and the new residential burglary case.
Hicks had originally been placed on drug court after pleading guilty to another residential burglary that occurred at a home in the rural Patoka area in 2020 where an iPad and change were stolen. Sheriff’s Department reports at the time indicate the iPad was later located at a home where Hicks frequented.
The petition to revoke probation was filed when Hicks was arrested in January for a residential burglary at a home on Cedar Road in rural Kell where change and jewelry was stolen. Video evidence led to Hicks arrest in that case where some of the jewelry was recovered.
While the petition to revoke to remove Hicks from drug court was still pending, he was arrested again earlier this month for possession of a stolen vehicle from a residence on West Sanger Street and possession of between five and 15 grams of meth.
After Salem Police learned where Hicks may be located, a search was completed at the home on the West Boone Extension where he was found hiding under a blanket in the basement and reportedly had the methamphetamine in his possession.
After getting out of prison, Hicks will be placed on one year mandatory release. He’ll also have to make $1,500 restitution in the 2020 burglary case, $598 restitution on the 2023 residential burglary, and pay a $1,000 fine and assessments. Hicks was given credit for 127 days already served in jail.
