The Salem Grade School Board Monday night agreed to seek a $50,000 matching state maintenance grant to replace the playground equipment at Franklin Park Middle School.

Superintendent Dr. Leslie Foppe told the board the playground equipment dates back to the opening of the school in the 1970s and is badly in need of being replaced.

If the state grant is approved, the district will pay their share of the cost through the one cent sales tax being collected for schools.

The board heard its annual audit from James Murphy of Leymone Hardcastle CPA.  He reported a clean audit with no difficulties.  The district remained in the recognition status for finances at 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.  Murphy reported district brought in $649,000 more than it spent with $9.4-million in the bank at the end of the fiscal year.  The amount of cash on hand dropped from 232 to 214 days.  The district spent $12,732 per pupil last fiscal year.

The board acted on a number of personnel issues.

Brittnie Chambers was hired as a paraprofessional.

The board accepted letters of resignation from paraprofessionals Kendra Koch, Kimber Organ and Lauren Morris and custodian Travis Edwards.

Foppe says applications are currently being accepted for two paraprofessionals and the custodian position.  You may apply through the administrative office at Hawthorn School.
