Remains of home that burned on Green Street Road southwest of Salem Wednesday evening.

A vacant home southwest of Salem was destroyed by fire Wednesday night.

Salem Assistant Fire Chief Bill Fulton says the home at 2951 Green Street Road east of Colestock Lane is owned by Dennis Johannes.

The fire was already through the roof and had fully engulfed the single story structure by the time firemen arrived. All that remains are some of the two by fours in the outside walls.

Fulton believes the fire was caused by a campfire or bonfire that had burned through leaves to the house. With no one around, it was not spotted until the fire had spread into the structure. Fulton says it is a mystery to who started the fire since the owners of the property had not been there in months.

The fire alarm came in at 9:33 on Wednesday night. Kell and Odin Firemen provided mutual aid on the scene while Kinmundy-Alma Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire. Firemen cleared the scene around 12:30 Wednesday morning.
