One person died and a second was injured when fire engulfed a home north of Bluford Monday night.
Jefferson Fire reported heavy fire at the rear of the single story home and heavy smoke showing from the front of the residence in the 19,000 block of North Harmony Lane. Relatives across the street were reportedly able to get the man who lived at the residence out onto the front porch. He was later moved away from the fire into the yard by firemen until being transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Due to the extent of the fire, the woman who lived in the residence could not be reached until after the flames were knocked down. She was pronounced dead on the scene by the Jefferson County Coroner’s office.
The names of the two have not yet been released.
The state Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
Bluford Firemen received mutual aid from Jefferson Fire, Mt. Vernon City, Wayne City, Kell and Woodlawn Firemen. Ewing North and Waltonville were called for change of quarters.
The fire call first came in at 8:30 Monday night. Firemen remained on the scene until one Tuesday morning.
