A fire listed as suspicious in nature heavily damaged a vacant condemned home in Mt. Vernon early Sunday morning.

Mt. Vernon Firemen say flames were shooting from the home at 600 South 19th at the corner of Logan Street upon their arrival at 1:30 Sunday morning.  Fire gutted the upstairs of the home while there was both fire and heavy smoke damage to the first floor.

The fire investigation is continuing, but the blaze was labeled suspicious because there were no utilities to the home.

Mt. Vernon City Firefighters received assistance at the scene from Jefferson Fire.  Kell and Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon main fire station in the event of another fire.

Firemen were able to clear the scene around five Sunday morning.   There were no injuries.
