The 71st Salem Invitational Tournament tipped off last night. Mount Vernon opened with a 51-41 win over Champaign Central outscoring the Maroons 15-5 in the 3rd quarter after playing the other 3 quarters even. Navontae Nesbit finished with 21on 10-of-15 shooting with 6 rebounds for the Rams.
They advance to tomorrow’s semifinals to play South 7 rival Carbondale after the Terriers nipped Madison 57-56. The Trojans had a chance with under a second left but could not get a shot off at the end. DeCarl Payne led the Terriers with 20, Jaden Patterson added 17 points and 14 rebounds. For Madison, Jamerrion Skinner finished with 26 and Derrion Enlow 14.
Tonight the Salem Wildcats will tip off with top-seed and defending champion and 7th ranked East St Louis at 6:30 with the return of Bill Hawley behind the mic for the broadcast on WJBD.
