While the extreme cold and winter storm scheduled to hit the area are still several days away, the long-range National Weather Service forecast is giving us some idea of what to expect. While forecasters are fairly certain we’ll have a white Christmas, they say it is too soon to project just how much snow the storm may produce. The National Weather Service is confident this will be the coldest Christmas in 40 years.
Here’s how the forecast shapes up right now. There is a 40 percent chance snow should arrive after midnight Thursday morning as the temperature drops to 27 degrees. There is a 70-percent chance of snow on Thursday with temperatures staying just under freezing at 31 degrees. The chance of snow dips to 40 percent on Thursday night as skies stay cloudy and the temperature drops to zero with blustery winds. The skies clear on Friday, but the high temperature will be just eight degrees with breezy conditions. Friday night’s low drops to two below zero. And the seven-day forecast for Christmas Eve calls for sunny and cold conditions high near 13.
While the deep Artic cold front and snow seem certain, the forecast will likely be modified several times before the storm system arrives. Watch and listen for further updates.
