The Salem Wildcats dropped their opener at the Lawrence County Capital Classic, falling to host Lawrenceville 55-45 yesterday afternoon. Salem led after each of the first 3 quarters, but went just 8-of-16 from the free throw line and was outscored 23-12 in the final frame to fall to the Indians. Salem was led by 11 points from Connor Tennyson. Jairen Stroud and Seth Bailey had 10 each.
Salem returns to action Saturday when they finish pool play against Mt Carmel at 12:30 at Red Hill High School. A win will put Salem in the 3rd place game at 6 pm and a loss puts them in the 5th place game at 4:30.
Olney won both their games Friday beating Red Hill 55-19 and then beating Fairfield 57-45. Lawrenceville was also 2-0 after their Salem win, they beat Mt Carmel 59-45.
The first game Saturday will see Red Hill and Fairfield at 11 a.m.
The Centralia Orphans moved to 3-0 punching their ticket to the Roxana Hoopsgiving Championship tonight after last night’s 60-49 win over Alton Marquette in the semifinals. Daryl Jones had 21 for the Orphans and Dustyn Collins added 20. Cruz Harlan finished with 12. Centralia will play Gateway Legacy Christian in the finals after their 67-49 win over Freeburg.
The Kaskaskian Classic opens up today at Carlyle. The first game is Pinckneyville and Okawville at 3 pm followed by Greenville and Woodlawn at 4:30, Flora and Nokomis at 6, and then Hillsboro and Carlyle at 7:30.
At Christopher on Friday, New Athens beat Zeigler in the consolation semifinal 75-46. The 7th place game Saturday will feature Thompsonville and Zeigler at 2, NCOE, and New Athens at 3:30 for the consolation title. The championship will see Waltonville and Wayne City. Waltonville beat Christopher 52-46 and Wayne City over Webber 59-40.
At Cumberland in the consolation semifinals, Okaw Valley beat Vandalia 49-41 and Newton over Marshall 81-56. Vandalia and Marshall start Saturday off for 7th place at 1:30 followed by Okaw Valley and Newton for the consolation title at 3 pm. North Clay will play for the championship tonight after their 57-50 win over Cumberland. They will get Casey Westfield in the finals while Dieterich will play Cumberland for 3rd.
At St Anthony, Breese Central finished pool play undefeated with a 48-45 win over Robinson. TTown was also undefeated and will take on Central in the championship after their 63-55 win over Mattoon.
At Mulberry Grove, Patoka/Odin finished pool play at 1-2 with their 64-53 loss to Ramsey.
Early in the day at Wesclin/Mascoutah, pool play was finished with Collinsville over Riverview Gardens 65-31, Mascoutah beat Marion 57-47, Nashville over SIUE Charter 60-12, and Columbia beat Wesclin 58-46. It sets up the trophy games for today. At 2 pm for 7th place, Riverview Gardens takes on SIUE Charter, Marion and Wesclin play for 5th place at 3:30, Mascoutah and Nashville for 3rd at 5 pm, and at 6:30 the title game between Collinsville and Columbia.
