Second wave of migrants arrive in Chicago by bus from Texas

A second group of migrants arrived in Chicago by bus from Texas on Sunday night.

The Governor of Texas Greg Abbott is sending busses of migrants who have crossed the border from Mexico to Chicago along with New York City and Washington DC to show his dissatisfaction with the county’s current immigration policies that are filling Texas towns near the Mexico border.

While Mayor Lori Lightfoot is encouraging Chicago residents to support the new immigrants, she is upset Abbott is not collaborating with the city.  Lightfoot said he is sending human beings, not cargo or freight, across the country to an uncertain destination.  She claims Abbot is manufacturing a human crisis.

Meanwhile, Lightfoot is pleased with a long list of people and organizations who have stepped up to provide help in Chicago.

Governor Pritzker last week indicated Illinois welcomes refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants and his administration is working with federal and city officials to ensure that these individuals are treated with respect and safety as they look to connect with their family and friends.  Pritzker noted his great-grandfather came to this country as an immigrant fleeing Ukraine in 1881.   He says immigrants just like his family seeking freedom and opportunity built this country.
