It’s a week that will go down in the history of Patoka Junior High sports.
For the first time ever, the Patoka Mohawks and Lady Mohawks have both won regional championships in the same season — and they did it just one day apart.
Now, both teams are headed to the state tournament.
The Patoka junior high softball team punched its ticket to state with an impressive 11-2 victory over Raccoon in the regional championship game.
The Lady Mohawks got three hits in the title game, including a pair of triples from Jessa Thalman, while Gentry Carbaugh added an inside-the-park home run.
Charlee Muray was dominant in the circle, striking out 12 batters while allowing just five hits and two runs over five innings of work.
Kloey Wuehler and Lily Krajefska each drove in a run, while Krajefska and Julianna Rushing collected two hits apiece.
Even in defeat, Raccoon had a milestone of its own. Nadea Crist recorded her 120th strikeout of the season.
But the day belonged to Patoka, as the Lady Mohawks celebrated a regional championship and secured their place alongside the Patoka baseball team at this weekend’s state tournament.
The Mohawk baseball team had already made history one day earlier by capturing its own regional title, setting up a rare opportunity for both Patoka teams to compete for state championships in the same weekend.
The Lady Mohawks will begin their state tournament run Saturday morning at 11:30 at the Oasis Sports Complex in Marion, taking on Carrier Mills.
The Patoka baseball team will open its state tournament at 3 p.m. Saturday against Jonesboro.
