Mary Jo Featherling, a beloved resident of Centralia, Illinois, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Fireside Nursing Home in Centralia at the age of 87. She was born in Centralia on March 2, 1939, and lived a life full of love, family, and community spirit. She is the daughter of John “Russ” Wheeler and Maurine (Harting) Wheeler. On May 13, 1961, she married Robert “Bob” E. Featherling, and he preceded her in death on September 10, 2021.
Mary Jo and Bob were owners of Meyers Tavern, where she graced the establishment with her warm presence. She was a cook at Wamac Grade School, Centralia City Schools, and Trinity Lutheran School, where she shared her passion for cooking with many.
A woman of varied interests, Mary Jo loved traveling and found joy and inspiration in new places and experiences. She was an avid reader and a gifted cook. Her skill with crochet brought comfort and warmth to many, and she gave countless hours to coaching softball and basketball, nurturing countless young athletes in Centralia and Hoffman.
Mary Jo is survived by her children: Mark Featherling and his wife Lynn of Centralia, Cathy Faulkner and her husband Norman of Centralia, and Mike Featherling of Springfield, Illinois. Her legacy continues with her cherished grandchildren, Megan Neal and her husband Todd of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Jacob Featherling and his fiancée Chelsea Kilzer of Belleville, Illinois, and two great-grandchildren: Hazel and Miles Neal; she is also survived by a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Russell Featherling and wife Verlaine of Centralia and Joyce Clement of Indiana and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Robert “Bob” E. Featherling, her sister: Elizabeth “Betty” Merkel, brothers-in-law: Richard Featherling, Tommy Featherling and David Featherling, and two sisters-in-law: Helen Lamb and Mary Tate.
In accordance with Mary Jo’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded, and no public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home and Cremation Services, located at 235 North Sycamore Street, Centralia, Illinois 62801, (618)532-3523, which is honored to be of service to Mary Jo’s Family.
