The Salem Wildcats 16U travel baseball team saw its tournament run come to an end Saturday, falling 6-0 to the Diamond Dawgs of Clinton County at John A. Logan College.

The Diamond Dawgs broke a scoreless tie with a four-run third inning before adding two more runs in the fourth to build a lead the Wildcats could not overcome.

Jax Schaubert got the start on the mound for Salem and cruised through the first two innings. However, three walks and two defensive errors helped set up a two-run double in the third inning that gave the Diamond Dawgs a 4-0 advantage.

The Dawgs added to their lead in the fourth inning as two walks and a single helped push the margin to 5-0. Zane Applegate entered in relief and recorded the final two outs of the inning after an RBI single made the score 6-0.

Salem managed three hits in the contest, with Owen Tennyson, Luke Boldt and Logan Butts each collecting one. The Wildcats’ best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth inning when Boldt and Butts delivered back-to-back singles with one out, but Salem was unable to bring either runner home.

Schaubert worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on two hits while striking out one and walking five. Applegate was effective in relief, tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and striking out two.

Because of tournament rules, the game concluded after six innings with the Diamond Dawgs holding a six-run lead.

The loss drops Salem to 6-5-1 on the summer season. Despite the setback, the Wildcats advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament after earning a victory in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup.
