Fire destroyed an empty two car garage behind a vacant residence at 517 North Cherry on Centralia’s northwest side late Sunday afternoon. The fire also damaged the siding on the house as well as a side of the garage next door.
Heavy smoke was pouring from the garage when firemen arrived. The cause of the fire has not been determined. There was no electricity to the building.
The name of the owner was not immediately known.
All available off-duty Centralia firefighters were called in for help. The Centralia Fire Protection District was called for assistance at the scene, while Sandoval Firemen covered the main Centralia Fire station downtown in case of another fire.
Ameren was called to check the electric and natural gas connections, and units from Centralia’s ESDA unit helped control traffic around the scene.
Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.
