The South Central School Board has voted to limit the increase of its property tax rate to help district residents deal with rising costs.
Superintendent Kerry Herdes says most of the increase will allow the district to capture new construction.
“The levy we’re passing is 3.73, and we feel like that’s a good number for us,” Herdes said. “We’re very mindful of what that levy does to the overall tax rate. The overall tax rate with us capturing some of the EAV will still push down our tax rate four cents. We’re continuing to let that tax rate drop, just like we have in the past. Last year we let it drop a quarter. We’re trying to do that just to do our part for the unnecessary burden on property tax payers.”
The board also abated the tax levy on money raised through the one cent sales tax for schools.
The board reviewed a special audit done on the cafeteria. There were no findings. The board learned there has been some reduction in food costs with a new walk-in freezer at the grade school.
The board approved a $50 bid from Justin Hanks for a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan.
The board acted on a number of personnel issues. A resignation was accepted from Kara Schukar as Marching Band Sponsor for the coming school year. Tony Farthing was hired as head boys coach for South Central Middle School effective for the 2026-27 school year. Colin Massie was approved as an unpaid volunteer assistant boys’ basketball coach at the high school.
