The Wamac City Council took action Monday evening to help continue a long-running springtime tradition in the community.
The council approved a motion to purchase 15,000 plastic eggs from Sunny Bunny Easter Eggs, at a cost of $2,235. Those eggs will be hidden throughout Wamac City Park on Easter Sunday, April 5th, for the community’s annual Easter egg hunt, which will kick off at 1 p.m. that day.
The event brings hundreds of guests to the park each year, and while the eggs are the center of the festivities, kids also have a chance to walk away with other prizes.
Mayor Jackie “Butch” Mathus says he will be looking for help from local organizations as well as the general public when it comes to obtaining items such as bicycles, tricycles, and Easter baskets.
“If they can bring the items here to city hall this month, we’d deeply appreciate it,” Mathus said. “It’s up to the community how great this will be a success. Everybody in the greater area has always rose up to the challenge, and a tip of the hat to everybody.”
In addition, Mathus says volunteers are being sought to help hide eggs and set up in the park. Those interested can show up at the park the morning of the event, with setup starting around 10 a.m.
In other action on Monday, the council approved the hiring of Wamac police officer Michael Rohrscheib to the position of zoning officer, to fill the vacancy left by the previous zoning officer, Jordan Claar.
