The Salem Aquatic Center closes for the season after this weekend. The final day for the fourth year in a row will be marked by the City of Salem Animal Control Fundraiser Event from noon to three on Sunday.
The director of the Salem Animal Control Facility Stephanie Rakers says money raised is used for two purposes.
“This is our big annual fundraiser where we earmark for our trap-neuter-return program as well as our medical emergency. So that earmarks those funds specifically for those two needs in our community.”
Rakers says the Trap-Neuter-Release program is going well with 350 feral cats now being fixed before barn placement, return to colony keepers, or for adoption.
She continues to see lots of support for the facility.
“We have some amazing supporters that continually reach out to us and our city. And they have blessed us to do a lot of things. We have got a lot of animals right now that animal controls and rescues in our area and really all over are overwhelming with the sheer volume of animals right now.”
Admission to the fund raiser is $5 which includes a free hot dog and bottle of water. No passes will be accepted during the event.
The Aquatic Center has been closing in mid-August due to the start of school and college’s next week which doesn’t leave them enough staff to continue operation.
