Firemen watch the smoke coming from the 2nd floor eves and windows at 418 South Maple during firefighting efforts early Friday evening.

An electric fire caused a minor fire but heavy smoke damage to part of a home occupied by Sharon Bierman at 418 South Maple Street in Centralia early Friday night.

Centralia City Firemen say smoke was showing from the second-floor eves and windows when they first arrived on the scene.  After entering the home, a small fire was found at the top of the stairs that apparently started from an extension cord.  It was quickly extinguished and the attic check to make sure it had no spread.  There was heavy smoke damage on the second story of the home and moderate smoke damage on the first floor.

A dog was found not breathing on the second floor.  He was taken downstairs where an attempt was made to provide CPR, but the dog could not be revived.

Bierman smelled smoke while on the first floor of the home and called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the staircase.

All available city firemen were called to the scene.  The Centralia Fire Protection District was called for mutual aid at the scene and Odin stood by at the Centralia Fire Station in the event of another fire.

Jennifer Heinrichsmeyer of Centralia owns the home.

The fire call came in at 6:18 Friday night.  Firemen remained on the scene until eight pm.
