It was a busy day for fire fighters with Kell, Salem, Centralia and Jefferson Fire all handling separate calls.
Kell firemen were called to a brush fire at 866 Foxville Road in Kell around four Monday afternoon. A fire was left unattended and spread to some cut logs and brush before being brought under control. No buildings were threatened. The owner of the property is not immediately clear.
Centralia City Firemen were called to the Walmart Store around four Monday afternoon to a car fire. Mary Cameron of Centralia came out of the store to find sparks shooting from the engine compartment. The sparks eventually started a fire that heavily damaged the engine. The cause has not been determined.
Jefferson Fire reports a van caught fire after being left along I=64 at mile marker 84 east of Mt. Vernon after breaking down. The female driver was seen walking towards Mt. Vernon earlier, but as of Tuesday morning had not been located. The van was a total loss.
The Salem Fire Protection District was called to a report of a semi trailer on fire at the northbound 112-mile marker on I-57 four miles south of Salem around five Tuesday morning. The problem turned out to be an overheated axle that was smoking, with no actual fire. The axle was cooled down with water.
