The schedule for hearing objections to the Marion County Republican caucus that selected Anthony Decker as the party’s sheriff’s candidate has been set. The six original objections will be heard on Friday beginning at nine am and continuing through 5:30 as originally scheduled. The seventh objection filed Tuesday by Patoka precinct committeeman John Thompson will be held at nine Saturday morning.
Most of the objections have been written by the same person in a legal format, with a space left for them to add their name and personal information. Each objector will be given a half hour to state their case. The election board will then have a second half hour for each case to ask questions.
If the election board rules against Decker, the Republicans will have to hold a new caucus, and County Clerk Steve Fox believes Decker could not be a candidate.
Meanwhile, Cody Rose, who dropped out of the caucus halfway through due to issues in the process, has filed as a write-in candidate for sheriff. That could also be challenged before the same election board.
The third candidate of the electoral board that will hear the objections has not been announced as of four Wednesday afternoon. The Chief Judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit, Martin Siemer, is making the selection. The other two members are Circuit Clerk Tiffany Schiker and County Treasurer Gary Purcell.
