Salem Mayor Nick Farley and City Manager Annette Sola praised city staff and volunteers for their work in the aftermath of the severe weather that hit Salem on May 26th.

Sola says a lot of downed trees and debris has been removed during the cleanup.

“I think as always every time we seem to fall on  hard times, the people in the community as well as all of our public works, police department, emergency management just come together quickly and making quick work getting things to look like its supposed to again.  I’m proud of city staff, and I know there were a lot of outside agencies and individuals from different churches and organizations that came together and went to different homes.”

Sola says the city will be wrapping up its cleanup effort on Friday.

“We did something a little different this time in picking up everything that people put at the curb.  That isn’t something we’ve  done in the past but with the large amount of debris we had on the ground and know the financial struggle it would put on people to clean that up.  This was a way to try and clean the community back up as quickly as possible.”

Sola says they will make one more pass through town this week to pick up any remaining debris brought to curbside.  She notes after that city crews need to move on to their scheduled summer projects.

Public Works Director Travis Sanders says starting the day after Memorial Day they have had two to three crews assigned each day to the cleanup utilizing a total of six trucks.  He says they have not kept track of the number of truckloads of debris hauled off.
