Around 65 attended the Christmas Day dinner at the Salem Presbyterian Church designed for those who have no family Christmas gathering.
Church member Joe Black has been part of the dinner since it began more than 40 years ago. He said after his father passed away he had left money to the church to restore the pulpit that had been used by William Jennings Bryan. When the work was completed, there was money left over and discussion began of how to use it for a Christmas program.
Black says several ideas were discussed, but the dinner was selected because it would bring people together on Christmas.
“What we wanted was something for individuals, couples, and even family of three or whatever who didn’t have anyone else to spend Christmas with. To be able to come down and join in singing and visiting. I think that is what is important.”
Black has had the role of making mashed potatoes for decades. About two dozen church members help in preparing the meal each year.
Black says they see some familiar faces each year, but there are always new people who join the dinner and socialize each year.
