A Georgia truck driver was injured when his rig left northbound I-57 at mile marker 107 nine miles south of Salem early Monday afternoon and overturned in a creek.

Kell Fire Chief Mick McDaneld says the truck ran off the pavement, hit a guard rail, took out 200 feet of guard rail and then flipped over on the passenger side of the truck into the creek below. McDaneld says the driver was trapped and had to be extricated. Firemen removed the windshield of the vehicle to get him out.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was transported by United Medical Response to Salem Township Hospital for treatment of apparent minor injuries.

McDaneld says there was a diesel spill into the creek. The Salem Fire Protection District was called for mutual aid to bring a haz mat truck to vacuum the fuel off the water in the creek.

State Police are handling the crash. They are not releasing any other information at this time.

The crash was reported at 1:30 Monday afternoon.
