The Salem City Council has agreed to purchase additional pipe for the Carlyle Lake raw water line to the Salem Reservoir.

Public Works Director Annette Sola says there have been several breaks on the line.

“It worked out last week and as of this moment things are up and running but its pretty crucial to that water line that we keep those parts in stock.  It’s expensive but we are able to do that work ourselves so that saves us a tremendous amount of money.”

The additional pipe for future repairs will cost the city $15,000. Sola says with the line is now operational and is being used to bring up the level of the Salem Reservoir that has fallen to 21 inches below the spillway.

In other action, the council formally accepted the $190,000 state grant that will help pay the cost of demolition of vacant substandard homes over the next two years.

Wabash Communications was given until the end of 2024 to complete a new warehouse facility they plan on the former Brown Shoe Company property at South Maple and West Whitaker Street. The council was told the original three year completion period was made difficult because of COVID-19 and the realignment of West Whitaker Street. The council also approved the rezoning of a very small section of the property from residential to industrial.

Mayor Nic Farley has asked that a change in the liquor license requiring a ten day notice for special events. He reports two recent incidents where the city was asked only a few days before the event which is difficult if either he or the city clerk are not available.

Following a closed session, the city council tabled action on the sale of city owned property pending an offer on an adjacent property.
