Pilots at the Centralia Balloon Fest came together to honor one of their own Sunday morning. Balloonist Bill Smith was presented with the annual High Fly Cup. The award is in memory of pilot Wes Rinker. It is presented each year to a pilot who is recognized by fellow balloonists for exhibiting the “Spirit of Ballooning.” Smith was surprised with the Cup at the traditional Sunday morning pilot/sponsor breakfast at the American Legion.
“Well, it’s a real honor. This is a fun event to come to, and it’s really great seeing a large community come out and support an event like this. And to be honored by all these people here that have been doing this for a long time was a really big honor for me,” Smith said.
Smith pilots “Aero Force One,” which Balloon Fest visitors may recognize as the special-shaped rocket ship balloon. Smith says it has been about 12 years since his schedule has allowed him to come to the Centralia Balloon Fest, but he’s hopeful to be able to return again next year.
Four other pilots were also recognized for their longtime attendance at Balloon Fest. Dennis Sutter was thanked for 20 years of attendance. He flies the “Dream Pie” balloon. Al Reusch was recognized for 25 years. Reusch pilots “Knot Over.” Pilots Jim House with “Heaven Bound” and Scott Wooge with “Purple 4Ever” were each honored for 30 years of attendance.
