The Salem Bryan Bennett Library has a summer of fun planned for kids during the summer break.
Some of the special programs include an appearance of Mad Science of St. Louis on June 8th at 1 p.m. in the Davenport Room. The theme of this year’s production is “Sounds Like Science.” Experiments include a loud dinosaur in a can; a glowing electric pickle; and a kid-created thunderstorm. This program is open to the public, free of charge. There is no pre-registration.
June 22 will be Chicken Day at Bryan-Bennett. From 4:30 to 6:30, Program Director Karen Shanafelt will show a few chickens from her own flock. She will talk to the group about her experiences raising chickens at 5 p.m. This would be an excellent program for individuals who are weighing the pros and cons of starting a backyard flock. This program is appropriate for all ages. No preregistration is required. There is no fee to attend.
Also during June, preschool story times will be at 10 a.m. on Fridays. Each story time features a couple of different books and age-appropriate activities. This program is open to children age 5 and younger. There is no pre-registration. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bryan-Bennett’s summer of fun also includes several reading challenges. Information is available on the different challenges at the circulation desk.
In July, the Summer of Fun at Bryan-Bennett continues with the Senior Reading Relay on July 8; a chess tourney on July 20th; a puzzle competition on July 28th; and the U of I Cooking School on July 24th to 28th.
