A new organization has been formed at Salem Township Hospital.
STH Cares has been created by hospital employees to assist patients with issues beyond their treatment when released from the hospital.
Shelly Rose, who serves as the hospital’s Outpatient Care Coordinator, says the benevolent fund was created after staff noticed a number of needs not being met.
“Social needs such as unstable housing, food and security, lack of reliable transportation, inability to afford medications exasperate poor physical and mental health as well as quality of life outcomes. We can provide the best medical care available and the patient can still have poor health outcomes if other social needs are not met. That is the goal of STH Cares, is care for the whole person not just that medical need.”
Rose says STH Cares is set up to help patients on a one time basis. For those facing ongoing issues, they are working to establish discounted medicine through pharmacies and other assistance for long term success.
Rose says several fund raisers have been held within the hospital and some employees are having payroll deductions going to STH Care. Their first big outside event is a Vendor Fair scheduled at the Marion County Fairgrounds from two to eight Friday.
“We have multiple vendors coming. It will be held at the Marion County Fairgrounds. Each vendor is giving us a proceed of their earnings.”
In addition to dozens of craft vendors, there will also be a drink and food truck at the Vendor Fair. There will also be a Silent Auction and Raffle. There is no admission charge. Rose is hoping for a big turnout and encourages everyone to attend.
Rose is coordinating the STH Cares effort with Gloria Hawkins.
You can contact either one if you are in need of assistance or information on the Vendor Fair. Rose can be reached at (618) 740-1683 and Hawkins at (618) 740-1679.
