A member of the Salem Tourism Commission approached the Marion County Board Tuesday night about Christmas lighting of the courthouse square.
Leon Chapman says before moving forward they wanted to see if the county board would support the project.
“It has not been decided on the prison board how much we would spend or what we would do. My initial play would be starting at the corner of the two highways and moving around the courthouse itself.”
The board members had an enthusiastic ‘yes’ response from the county board and a 100-percent buy-in from the sheriff. Under the plan, Chapman says the tourism commission would buy the decorations and turn them over to the sheriff for storage and yearly display.
The sheriff would also be on the committee that selects the decorations so he can help find displays that would be easy to put up and take down.
