The GED is getting a new name come January.
A new state law aims to lift some of the stigma about getting a GED instead of graduating traditionally. Illinois Community College Board Spokesperson Matt Berry says starting on January 1st it will be knows as the State of Illinois High School Diploma.
“Our graduates who do complete their high school equivalency and take the GED test have the same knowledge, experience and skills as a high school graduate and we want to make sure those students are recognized. The term diploma is much more universally recognized with colleges and universities when you are applying for schools and employers when you are seeking a job.”
Requirements to pass will remain the same. Those who already have a GED certificate can get a replacement with the new name from their local Regional Office of Education.
