The final night of the Odin Firemen’s Picnic on Saturday drew a large crowd with long lines for food and many of the carnival activities.
Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith is appreciative of the support from the community for the three-day event. He reported Thursday’s crowd was about normal and Friday may have been down some.
Smith explains where some of the money earned this year is headed.
“New brush/utility truck should be here hopefully early November, and we will take funds from this weekend to purchase equipment for it like hoses and nozzles and things it needs to be properly fitted with.”
Smith feels the great weather helped bolster attendance. The fireworks display provided an exciting end to the yearly event that is believed to have been held for more than 35 years.
Car show participation was up this year, with over 40 vehicles entered.
The Best of Show Award went to Tom Brough and his 1933 Ford. Mike and Connie Tate of Newton won the award for traveling the furthest. JL Dunahee of Salem won for Best Motorcycle. The Chief’s Choice went to a 1953 Chevy entered by Steve Dunahee of Salem. The Kids Choice went to a 1974 Volkswagon Bus owned by Zackary Weaver of Centralia. Best MoPar went to Jody and Martin Wimberly of Odin for a 1969 Dodge. Best Paint Job went to Greg Tate of Walnut Hill for his 1955 Chevy Pickup.
