CHICAGO (AP) — Cardinals rookie Brendan Donovan hit a two-run double in the 10th inning and St. Louis overcame a baserunning mistake to beat the Chicago Cubs 7-4 and split a doubleheader. Ian Happ had two doubles for the Cubs, who won the first game 6-1. Donovan doubled after Michael Rucker walked Nolan Arenado. Harrison Bader followed with an RBI single, and another run scored on a double play during a four-run 10th. A Cardinals mistake kept them from taking the lead in the ninth. Edmundo Sosa missed third base attempting to score from second on Nolan Gorman’s single off David Robertson. Sosa had to return to third, and Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to end the threat.

— Any questions concerning the New York Yankees’ starting pitching have been silenced during a five-game winning streak. The Yankees have allowed just three runs over their last five games after Luis Severino combined with two relievers on a one-hitter in a 3-0 shutout of the Tigers. Severino struck out 10 over seven innings and allowed only a second-inning single by Miguel Cabrera. Severino’s gem came less than 24 hours after Gerrit Cole took a perfect game into the seventh, and two days after Jameson Taillon retired his first 21 hitters. Aaron Judge belted his major league-leading 21st homer on the first pitch by Beau Brieske (boh BRIHS’-kee). Anthony Rizzo also went deep and Josh Donaldson lifted a sacrifice fly for the Yankees Giancarlo Stanton went 1 for 4 after being activated off the injured list following a brief absence with a sprained right ankle.
— The Blue Jays won for the ninth time in 10 games as José Berríos (beh_REE’-ohs) struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings of a 12-3 pounding of the Twins. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk and Bo Bichette (bih-SHEHT’) homered to help Toronto set a season high for runs and hits. Lourdes Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) Jr. supplied three of the Jays’ 16 hits.
— Jake Burger’s first career pinch-hit homer highlighted a three-run eighth in the White Sox’s first win in five games, 3-2 versus the Rays. Adam Engel opened the eighth with a pinch-hit double off Brooks Raley and scored on Danny Mendick’s single. Tampa right-hander Drew Rasmussen was in line for his sixth win after scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings.
— The Red Sox rolled to an 8-0 rout of the Athletics as Nick Pivetta pitched two-hit ball over seven innings to win his fifth consecutive start. Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz), Alex Verdugo, and Franchy Cordero drove in two runs apiece, with Verdugo providing three of Boston’s 14 hits. The A’s dropped their fifth in a row.
— Salvador Perez broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning as the Royals blanked the Astros, 6-0. Perez’s seventh home run snapped an 0-for-22 streak and was the first homer since May 14 for the defending major league home run champ. Perez added an RBI double during a four-run eighth.
— Trey Mancini hit the longest home run by an Oriole this season, a 438-foot blast in a 5-4 decision over the Guardians. Rougned Odor (ROOG’-nehd oh-DOHR’) hit a shot that landed on Eutaw Street and Austin Hays also went deep. Jorge Lopez worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth before notching his fourth save.
— The Rangers earned a 3-2 win over the Mariners behind Adolis (ah-DOH’-lees) Garcia’s three-run homer in the fourth inning. Winning pitcher Glenn Otto allowed only two hits over five innings, but the right-hander walked five and hit a batter in the first four frames. The Mariners got their runs on Jesse Winker’s two-run homer in the fifth.
— Pete Alonso drove in five runs with his 15th and 16th homers as the Mets dumped the Dodgers, 9-4. Eduardo Escobar and Francisco Lindor (lihn-DOHR’) smacked solo shots for New York, which avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season. The Mets rallied after Dodgers scored four runs in the second inning following an error by Alonso, giving Los Angeles a 4-1 lead.
— MacKenzie Gore struck out 10 while limiting the Brewers to three hits over six innings of the Padres’ 4-0 shutout win. Jake Cronenworth hit an RBI double in the third inning and had a two-run shot that capped a three-run outburst in the fifth. San Diego has blanked Milwaukee in the last two games.
— Matt Swarmer followed up his first major league start with his first big-league win, allowing one run and two hits over six innings of the Cubs’ 6-1 trouncing of the Cardinals in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Frank Schwindel homered in a three-hit showing and had two RBIs. Schwindel is batting .301 since May 11 and leads Chicago with six homers and 18 ribbies in the stretch.
— The Phillies handed the Angels their 10th consecutive loss as Zack Wheeler and Johan Camargo led Philadelphia’s 7-2 victory. Wheeler struck out nine and held Los Angeles to two runs and six hits over six solid innings. Camargo hit a pair of two-run singles and J.T. Realmuto (ree-al-MOO’-toh) doubled three times.
— Jesús Sánchez lifted a game-winning, sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to push the Marlins past the Giants, 5-4. Sanchez also hit an RBI double in a four-run fifth after San Francisco took a 4-0 lead. Jason Vosler hit a solo homer and Donovan Walton hit a three-run double for the Giants.
— The Pirates beat the Diamondbacks, 2-1 on rookie Jack Suwinski’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. The homer spoiled an outstanding effort by Arizona starter Zach Davis, who scattered three hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Arizona’s Ketel (keh-TEHL’) Marte hit a pair of doubles and ran his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games.
— Juan Soto hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to help the Nationals turn a 7-3 deficit into a 10-8 win at Cincinnati. Maikel (MY’-kehl) Franco and Luis Garcia drove in ninth-inning runs to send Washington to its second straight win. Cincinnati led by four after a five-run fifth inning that included Albert Almora Jr.’s second career grand slam.
