The Columbia Eagles have advanced to their first state semifinal since 2007 and avenged last year’s sectional championship loss to rival Freeburg winning 15-8 to eliminate the defending 2a state champions at Itchy Jones Stadium in the SIU Super Sectional.
It took awhile for Dom Voegele to settle in on the mound for the Eagles, but once he did he was near untouchable. Voegele gave up 4 unearned runs in the first two innings but the junior then flashed some of the dominant stuff he’s shown all season going 6 innings striking out 12.
The Eagles are 26-7 on the season at will play Joliet Catholic at 5pm Friday at Dozier Park in Peoria. The first 2a state semifinal will be Richmond Burton and Maroa Forsyth at 3pm.
