Four people were taken to the hospital for treatment Monday afternoon when a car being pursued by a Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputy crashed when trying to avoid stop sticks placed on Illinois Route 161 at Billhartz Road near New Baden.
State Police say preliminary information indicates a car driven by 25-year-old Dashawn Crenshaw of St. Louis was being pursued when he ran over spike strips that had been deployed by a second deputy. Crenshaw lost control when trying to avoid the spike strips and left the right side of the road. He then re-entered the road and struck the rear of a pickup truck driven by 41-year-old Brian Huegen of Albers.
Crenshaw, Huegen, and two Centralia residents who were passengers in the vehicle being pursued were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The two Centralia residents are identified as 20-year-old Sheila Hall and 22-year-old Mariha Anderson.
Crenshaw was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and improper lane usage.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department has not released any further details on the crash.
