The Salem City Council Monday night will be asked to give first reading approval to a proposal to charge for profit businesses with video gaming machines.
The proposed fee is $250, the maximum allowed by the state. The state earlier capped the fee at $50 per machine, but Salem has never had a fee in the past. The proposed new fee would go into effect July 1st of next year. Mayor Nic Farley suggested earlier the fee might help control the number of machines in
town. Non-profits with video gaming machines would not be charged the fee.
The City Council will be asked to purchase 800 electronic radio transmitters for water meters along with some through the lid antenna connections. The budgeted items continue to work towards the city’s goal of being able to read all meters remotely. The cost of the equipment being purchased from United Systems is $79,968.
The council will be asked to approve Frank Addison as a new member of the planning commission. He has been serving on the zoning board of appeals.
The Salem City Council meeting begins at six Monday night at city hall.
