Centralia High School Superintendent Chuck Lane told the school board Thursday night that some improvements to Trout Arena are already underway. He says the installation of an improved sound system for the gym, set for this summer, has been almost completed and is expected to be available for May Fete. The new scoreboard and other gym improvements are still set for July.

Lane also told the board that the purchase of 20 acres of property near the high school is in the final stages:

“The closing date is coming up on the property cattycorner here to our current school facility from the Kent family it’s 20 acres that we agreed to pay $100,000 for several months ago.  We are just now getting all the paperwork done and able to close on it.  So it’s exciting for our school district to finally be getting that property.”

The new property is a potential site for a proposed solar farm to be used by the high school.

Lane announced Centralia High School will receive approximately $100,000 in additional state funding over the next few months due to an error in figuring state aid over the past four years. He called the money a “nice bonus”.

Summer math and English lab classes will be offered at the high school this summer, in an effort to help incoming freshmen who need to improve their English or math skills, according to information presented by Principal Reid Shipley, who said that students who successfully complete the month of classes, which will be offered from June 6 through July 7, from 8 a.m. to noon, will receive one semester of credit for the class and will not be required to take a similar lab in the fall.

In the principal’s report, Dr. Shipley reminded the board that May Fete is next and told them that a performance for students similar to last years will be presented again this year. Several feeder schools plan to attend as well, he added. He also reminded the board that the annual Academic Pep Assembly is set for May 13 at 10 a.m.; graduation is May 22 at 2 p.m.; and that the final day for teachers is May 23.

In other action the board:

  • Approved the upcoming dedication of the Craig Freels Tennis Courts for May 21 at 2:30 p.m.
  • Approved a trip next year for the band to attend and perform at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans
  • Changed the date for the June board meeting to June 27
  • Accepted the resignation of Reanna Hutton as assistant girls’ volleyball coach, effective March 24, 2022
  • Accepted the resignation of Bethany Lorenzini as head dance coach, effective March 29, 2022.
