UNDATED (AP) — Arizona is the fourth and final No. 1 seed to advance to the second round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Christian Koloko scored 17 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and keyed a big second-half surge that helped the Wildcats beat No. 16 Wright State, 87-70. Bennedict Mathurin scored 18 points and Dalen Terry had 16 for the 32-3 Wildcats, who their first NCAA Tournament win since advancing to the 2017 Sweet 16.
In other first-round action Friday:
— Duke began retiring Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski’s final tournament by trouncing Cal State Fullerton, 78-61. Freshman Paolo Banchero scored 17 points to lead the Blue Devils, who jumped to a double-digit lead in the first 4 1/2 minutes.
— Freshman Tyrese Hunter scored 23 points and Iowa State displayed hard-nosed defense to beat No. 6 LSU, 59-54. Izaiah Brockington added 19 points as the 11th-seeded Cyclones got their first win in the NCAA tourney since 2017.
— Alfonso Plummer scored 15 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 12 seconds remaining to send fourth-seeded Illinois past Chattanooga, 54-53. Kofi Cockburn had 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks for the Illini, who never led until the final minute.
— All-American guard Johnny Davis scored 25 points and sparked a second-half comeback as Wisconsin withstood Colgate’s 3-point assault and beat the Raiders, 67-60. Davis had Wisconsin’s last 14 points and showed he’s all the way back from the injured left ankle that knocked the Big Ten player of the year out of the Badgers’ regular-season finale.
— E.J. Liddell scored 16 points and Malaki Branham added 14 as Ohio State knocked off 10th-seeded Loyola Chicago, 54-41. The Buckeyes allowed just 18 points in the first half and held Loyola Chicago to 27% shooting.
— Kyler Edwards scored 25 points on six 3-pointers in Houston’s 82-68 victory against UAB. Fabian White Jr. added 14 for the Cougars, who don’t have any starters remaining from the team that reached the Final Four last year.
— Second seed Villanova trailed by eight before going on a 35-10 spurt bridging both halves of an 80-60 thumping of Delaware. Justin Moore scored 21 points and Collin Gillespie added 14 for the Wildcats.
— Charlie Moore made two free throws with three seconds left and finished with 16 points to lift 10th-seeded Miami to a 68-66 win over No. 7 Southern California. Isaiah Wong led Miami with 22 points before fouling out with 2:07 to play with his team ahead 59-58.
— Andrew Jones scored 21 points as Texas beat Virginia Tech, 81-73, the Longhorns’ first NCAA Tournament victory since 2014. Marcus Carr beat the halftime buzzer with a shot from well beyond half court to put Texas ahead for good.
— Notre Dame was a 78-64 winner against Alabama as Cormac Ryan scored a career-high 29 points, including seven 3-pointers. Ryan was 10 of 13 from the field and made a career-best seven of his nine tries from beyond the arc.
— Mike Miles Jr. scored 21 points and ninth-seeded TCU got its first NCAA Tournament victory in 35 years by crushing Seton Hall, 69-42. Damion Baugh scored 14 points for the Horned Frogs, who shot 51% from the field and outscored the Pirates, 40-15 in the paint.
— Michigan State pulled out a 74-73 win over Davidson behind Joey Hauser’s 27 points. A.J. Hoggard added 14 points for the Spartans, who used a 13-3 run in the second half to go ahead for good.
— Freshman Jabari Smith 20 points and 14 rebounds as second-seeded Auburn pulled away from Jacksonville State late in the first half to win its 10th straight NCAA Tournament opener, 80-61. Walker Kessler finished a block shy of a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks.
— Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 20 points and set a dominating tone in the opening minutes for Texas Tech, which overwhelmed Montana State 97-62. Bryson Williams also scored 20 points for Texas Tech, which shot 66.7% from the field, including making 12 of 20 3-pointers.
— Jaden Ivey raced his way to 22 points and Zach Edey controlled the action inside, helping Purdue coast to a 78-56 win against Yale. The 7-foot-4 Edey made the most of his size advantage against the Ivy League champions, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes.
