Fire leaves rural Alma couple homeless

An occupant of a mobile home in rural Alma was able to escape his burning residence with only minor injuries Tuesday morning.

Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says the Carl Sisson home at 3296 Hicks Road was on the ground upon their arrival.

Day reports Sisson had taken his wife to work, returned home, and gone to bed after shutting the bedroom door.   When waking up and opening the door, he found the fire was starting to engulf the entire mobile home.

Sisson was able to get out with only singed hair and a few blisters on his hand but was not able to get his cell phone or keys which were both lost in the fire.   As a result, he had to walk to a neighbors home about a half-mile away only in his underwear to get help.  Sisson declined medical treatment.

There were reports of what appeared to be a large brush fire in the area about 45 minutes before the fire alarm came in, providing some information on how long the fire may have been burning before being called in.

Day says it is believed the fire began in the kitchen area.

He reports unfortunately the family had no insurance and were not able to salvage anything.   Day called Red Cross in hopes they could help.

The fire call came in at 8:30 Tuesday morning.   Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.
