The Centralia City Schools Board of Education has begun planning for multiple renovation projects in the district. At the meeting on Tuesday night, the board authorized Lunsford Architects to start the design and bid process for work on the junior high school’s mansard and replacement of Tiger Gym’s roof, as well as multipurpose rooms for Central and Jordan schools.
Superintendent Craig Clark says the multipurpose rooms at Jordan and Central Schools would be attached to the current buildings and provide room for physical education, events, and bleachers. Both schools right now just have a shared cafeteria and gym facility which limits activities and spacing out of students. The proposed cost of the Central School addition is $2.8-million. At Jordan, the cost is estimated at $2.5-million.
The architect will look at three options for replacement of the mansard roof at Centralia Junior High with the board to decide once cost figures are finalized. The reroofing of the Centralia Junior High gym is expected to cost $200,000.
Lunsford Architects will create construction documents for each of these projects, then contractors will submit bids to carry out the projects.
The board approved the tentative tax levies for 2021, which will be adopted at the next board meeting.
All district schools have completed their parent/teacher conferences. The superintendent’s report stated that 100% of parents at Jordan and Schiller school had been contacted, while 98% of Central parents and 96% of CJHS parents had been contacted. The report also mentioned that students in district schools successfully completed fire drills, tornado drills, and lockdown drills during the month of October with no issues.
At the end of the meeting, in light of School Board Members Day taking place in the month of November, superintendent Craig Clark took a moment to give thanks to Centralia school board members for their commitment to the community.
“I do want to publicly thank the school board. I think a lot of the stuff they do on a regular basis goes unnoticed. We have a very dedicated and involved school board not just with the district in the schools but also in the community. I really believe our community trusts our school board and I think they make wise decisions in the best interest of our kids. And I think during this month of Board Appreciation they get acknowledged for what they do.”
The next meeting of the Centralia City Schools Board of Education will take place on December 14th.
