The Wamac Board of Alderman has agreed to purchase five substandard homes to demolish them.

The city has received a $44,100 grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority to tear down up to six structures.    The land purchased Monday night for demolition projects were at 225 East 17th as well as 343-345 and 349 Sanders Street.   Another home will be submitted for demolition approval at a later date.

The demolition work is expected to take place this summer.

The city has received a $48,885 CURES grant to reimburse police salaries during COVID.   The city agreed to provide a $1,000 bonus to each of the city’s seven police officers and one public works employee out of the money because they are on the front lines.

The council was told three businesses have been awarded stabilization grants through the city.   Jerry’s Bar and Grill will receive $25,000, The Industrial Tavern $20,000, and McGuire’s $20,000.

The council tabled the purchase of a new squad car while Police Chief Steve Prather determines if a pickup truck may better meet their needs.
