Opal “Virgie” Edwards, 81 of St. Clair, formerly of Patoka passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2020 surrounded by family. Opal was a devout Christian woman of the Baptist faith, who instilled the same values in her children. Opal loved being a dedicated wife to Woody, and homemaker. She was happy to raise her children at home and watch them grow. The whole family shares fond memories of camping, fishing, and traveling with Opal. As well as the grand BBQs that she would host with all the mouthwatering dishes she would serve up to all her family. Opal was blessed with the many talents of gardening, quilting, and sewing. She would sew gorgeous dresses for family members and their dolls. Opal’s garden was always full of her famous roses that she was known for growing with her green thumb. The most treasured part of her life was being a “Grandma” and “MawMaw” to her grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Pratt Cemetery in rural Patoka, IL with Pastor Josh Earls officiating. Memorials may be made in Opal’s honor to Diabetes Foundation. Day Macz Funeral Home in Patoka is privileged to be assisting the family of Opal Edwards with arrangements. Survivors that will cherish memories of Opal’s generosity and kindness include her beloved family, son, Carl Edwards and wife Marilyn of Dittmer, MO; daughters, Marsha Myers of St, Clair, MO, Angie Albert and husband David of Patoka, Amanda Highley and husband Billy of Cedar Hill, MO; 12 precious grandchildren; 14 cherished great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond “Dee” Prater and wife Norma of Lubbering, MO; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

She was born on March 22, 1939 the daughter of Moses and May (Warren) Prater in Eminence, MO. She married the love of her life Henry “Woody” Edwards on November 15, 1957 in Patoka and he preceded her in death on March 25, 2006. In addition to her husband Woody, she was preceded in death by her parents, Moses and May Prater; brothers, Lowell Prater, Lloyd Prater, Floyd Prater, Bill Prater; sisters, Imogene Folta, Eunice Martin, Betty Duckett; sons-in-law, James Myers, and Steven Moore; and a granddaughter, Kayla Moore.
