Shirley D. Wielt, 83, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 2:05 pm on June 7, 2021, at her residence in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Mrs. Wielt owned and operated Shirley’s Daisy Children’s Clothes and was a bookkeeper at E.F. Wielt Plumbing Company. She also worked at Canter Drilling Company and the Mount Vernon Airport as a secretary. Shirley loved working craft shows with her daughter specializing in stained glass and ceramics. She enjoyed working with the Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts. Shirley was a member of Meadowbrook Christian Church and had her own private pilot license. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held Friday, June 11, 2021, from 5:00 pm to 700 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 7:00 pm with Mr. Mike Sheets officiating. Memorials may be made in Shirley’s honor to Meadowbrook Christian Church. Please remember to observe social distancing at this time. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Kathy Burgin of Louisville, Kentucky; sons, Russ Wielt and wife, Monica of Bluford, Illinois, Jeff Wielt and wife, Angie of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Logan Wielt and wife, Bailey of Bluford, Illinois, Chance Klebba and wife, Chelsea of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jake Burgin and wife, Ashley of Mount Washington, Kentucky, Parker Wielt of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Ethan Wielt of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Joseph Wielt of Bluford, Illinois, Amy Bray and husband, Paul of Mount Washington, Kentucky, Shelby Higgenbotham and husband, Kyle of Hillview, Kentucky, Mica Klebba of Mount Vernon, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Aubree, Eliza, Levi, Jack, Will, Taylor, Finley, Indie, Emmit, Oliver; and several nieces and nephews.
She was born June 24, 1937, in Prescott, Arkansas to the late A.E. “Red” and Elsie LaVerne (Cook) Canter. Shirley married Thomas “Tom” Russell Wielt on June 17, 1956, in First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. They were blessed with nearly fifty-seven years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 29, 2013. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Gary Wielt; daughter, Tammy Klebba; and sister, Yvonne Barbieri.
