Harris, U.S. attorney for the Central District of Illinois, explains on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 the reasoning behind the sentences his office sought in the cases of three former Illinois Department of Corrections officers who were convicted of federal civil rights violations and obstruction charges in the beating death of inmate Larry Earvin, 65, at Western Illinois Correctional Center in May 2018. Prosecutors sought life sentences for Alex Banta, 31, and Todd Sheffler, 54, for their roles in the incident but they were each sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. The third defendant, Willie Hedden, 44, pleaded guilty and testified against Banta and Sheffler. The government sought a sentence of 10 years for him, but he was sentenced to six years.
