— The Philadelphia Phillies won their game over the San Diego Padres 4-2, but they may have lost star player Bryce Harper for the season with a left thumb fracture. Harper was hit by a 97-mile high-and-tight fastball in the fourth inning by the Padres Blake Snell. Harper immediately crumbled to the ground in pain and was holding his injured hand for several minutes while the Phillies head trainer Paul Buchheit attended to him. The team announced the injury to the reigning NL MVP, who will be out indefinitely. He will undergo further evaluation in the next few days.

Also in the MLB:

— Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Daniel Hudson has been placed on the injury list with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament that ends his season. The move was expected after Hudson’s knee buckled in the eighth inning of Friday night’s 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves as he reacted to a dribbler hit by Ronald Acuña Jr. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says Hudson’s recovery is expected to take six to nine months. The injury takes away the team’s top set-up reliever. The Dodgers activated infielder Hanser Alberto from the paternity list and recalled right-hander, Mitch White. Outfielder Stefen Romero was designated for assignment.

— The Seattle Mariners will be without another key member of their offense for at least a couple of weeks, but considering how bad the injury to first baseman Ty France looked two days ago, they consider themselves fortunate. France was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left elbow strain. He was involved in a collision during the fifth inning of Thursday’s game at Oakland. France was taking the throw at the bag when he collided with Oakland’s Sheldon Neuse. France had an MRI on Friday that revealed a Grade 2 flexor strain.

— Mark Appel is a big-league ballplayer nine years after he was selected No. 1 overall in the amateur draft. Appel has been promoted by the Philadelphia Phillies. The right-hander, who turns 31 on July 15, went 5-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 19 appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Appel is stepping in for right-hander Connor Brogdon, who has been placed on the COVID-19-related injury list. Appel was selected by Houston with the No. 1 pick in the 2013 draft after a standout college career at Stanford.
