CHICAGO (AP) — Alfonso Rivas had three hits and five RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a four-game slide by pounding the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-0. Rivas, who was recalled Friday from Triple-A Iowa, capped Chicago’s eight-run second with a three-run homer. He tacked on RBI singles in the fourth and fifth. The Cubs finished with 23 hits in their most lopsided shutout win dating to at least 1901. Nico Hoerner collected a career-high four hits, and Seiya Suzuki, Willson Contreras, and Ian Happ had three hits apiece. It was more than enough support for Kyle Hendricks, who pitched seven innings of two-hit ball.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Dakota Hudson pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-hit ball, Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a sixth-inning double and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Cincinnati 5-0. It is the 11th straight loss for the injury-plagued Reds. Hudson entered the game with a 7.71 ERA, but limited Cincinnati to two hits. The Reds have lost 11 straight for the first time since 2016. Right-hander Tyler Mahle (1-2) took the loss for Cincinnati.

— Miguel Cabrera is the 33rd player in major league history with 3,000 hits. Cabrera did it with a first-inning single as the Detroit Tigers dismantled the Colorado Rockies, 13-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. He’s the seventh player with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits, and the first Venezuelan to reach three grand in hits. Cabrera added a bases-loaded, two-run single in the sixth, then was pulled for a pinch-runner and drew another huge ovation. Spencer Torkelson slammed a three-run homer that drove in Cabrera in the opening frame. In the nightcap, Austin Gomber tossed six scoreless innings and the Rockies spoiled the major league pitching debut of Beau Brieske with a 3-2 victory. Briese allowed only three hits in five innings but two were homers by Connor Joe and Charlie Blackmon. Meanwhile, Yankees fans marred the end of their team’s 6-5 comeback win over the Guardians. Fans in the right-field bleachers pelted Cleveland outfielders with bottles, cans, and debris in a chaotic scene moments after Isiah Kiner-Falefa (KY’-nur fah-LEH’-fah) and pinch-hitter Gleyber (GLAY’-bur) Torres got RBI hits with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Kiner-Falefa hit a tying double over rookie left fielder Steven Kwan, who was shaken up running into the wall. Before play resumed, Cleveland right fielder Oscar Mercado pointed at the stands, and center fielder Myles Straw climbed the chain-link fence to confront face-to-face at least one fan.
— The Rays tossed no-hit ball for the first nine innings before Kevin Kiermaier’s two-out, two-run home run in the 10th gave Tampa Bay a 3-2 victory over the Red Sox. Bobby Dalbec’s RBI triple in the 10th inning was the first hit for Boston.
— Toronto sent Houston to its fourth straight loss as George Springer hit a leadoff homer in the first game against his former team, helping the Blue Jays down the Astros by a 3-2 margin. The game was tied at 2 with one out in the seventh inning when Santiago Espinal went deep for the second straight game.
— Ty France had five hits and five RBIs, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning of the Mariners’ 13-7 victory against the Royals. The game was tied 7-7 in the eighth until Jesse Winker laced a two-run double.
— The Rangers pulled out a 2-0 win over the Athletics on Brad Miller’s two-run single in the eighth inning. Texas starter Martín Pérez settled for a no-decision after two-hitting Oakland over six innings.
— Luis Arraez (ah-RY’-ehz) had four hits and three RBIs in the Twins’ 9-2 pounding of the White Sox. Byron Buxton was 4-for-4 with a solo homer, two ribbies, and three runs scored to support Dylan Bundy’s five shutout innings.
— Ryan Mountcastle collected three RBIs, including the go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning of the Orioles’ 5-4 win versus the Angels. Mike Trout set an Angels’ record with his 21st multi-home run game, but the Birds have their first two-game winning streak of the season.
— The Diamondbacks’ offense had a season-high 11 hits and Humberto Castellanos (kas-tee-AH’-nohs) allowed two runs over five innings of a 5-2 downing of the Mets. Daulton Varsho and Pavin Smith each had two hits and an RBI as Arizona handed New York its second loss in seven games.
— Pinch-hitter Garrett Cooper’s bases-loaded, go-ahead single in the seventh drove in two runs in the Marlins’ 9-7 victory in Atlanta. Miami’s Jazz Chisholm drove in three runs with four hits, including a leadoff homer.
— Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs) stole home, Hunter Renfroe homered and Adrian Houser tossed six solid innings in the Brewers’ 5-3 win at Philadelphia. Losing pitcher Zack allowed four runs in the fifth and lost his third straight start.
— Alex Wood worked five effective innings before San Francisco’s bullpen closed out a 5-2 win at Washington. Joc Pederson had two hits and an RBI for the Giants, who scored four in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
— The Padres had dropped 10 straight to the Dodgers before Austin Nola lifted a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning to give San Diego a walk-off win against Los Angeles, 3-2. Jurickson Profar threw out a runner at third base in the 10th, two innings after his miscue gave the Dodgers two runs.
