MILWAUKEE (AP) — Steven Matz pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1. Paul DeJong hit a two-out RBI double in the fourth and Corey Dickerson singled home an insurance run with two outs in the eighth. Milwaukee’s Victor Caratini ripped a two-out solo shot to left off Génesis Cabrera that cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1. Giovanny Gallegos struck out Andrew McCutchen to end the eighth and worked around Willy Adames’ leadoff single in the ninth to earn his second save in as many opportunities.

— The Arizona Diamondbacks were finally able to celebrate a victory at Citi Field. The DBacks had dropped 11 straight in New York since August 2017 before defeating the Mets, 3-2. Sergio Alcantara snapped a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, Ketel Marte (keh-TEHL’ mahr-TAY’) added an RBI double. Carlos Carrasco gave the 6-3 Mets five shutout innings, leaving the team’s starting rotation with a 1.17 ERA.
— Trea Turner launched a two-run homer and the Dodgers finally caught up to some record-setting heat from Cincinnati rookie Hunter Greene in their fifth straight win, 5-2. Greene threw an astounding 39 pitches 100 mph or faster, the most in a single game since pitch tracking began in 2008.
— The Braves came away with a 5-2 win at San Diego behind Ian Anderson, who pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning. Ozzie Albies homered on the game’s second pitch before Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna (oh-ZOO’-nah) went deep for Atlanta.
— Michael Chavis capped a three-hit night with a lead-off triple in the eighth before scoring an insurance run in the Pirates’ 6-4 downing of the Nationals. Chavis has reached safely in eight of 14 plate appearances this season and has gone 3-for-4 in two of his past three games.
— Bryce Harper doubled in two runs, walked twice, and stole home in the Phillies’ 10-3 pounding of the Marlins. Alec Bohm had two hits and three RBIs, and Nick Castellanos added two singles and an RBI to help Philadelphia snap a four-game losing skid.
— Brandon Belt scored the tiebreaking run and was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs in the Giants’ fourth win in a row, 4-2 at Cleveland. Belt came home on Wilmer Flores’ grounder and Austin Slater subsequently scored on a wild pitch.
— C.J. Cron (krohn) homered twice and Antonio Senzatela (sehn-zah-TEH’-lah) pitched five solid innings in his 100th career start for Colorado as the Rockies beat the Cubs, 9-6. Cron hit a two-run shot in a four-run third inning and connected again leading off the seventh.
— José Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) homered for the first time this season and had two RBIs before Liam Hendriks left the bases loaded in the ninth inning of the White Sox’s 3-2 win over the Rays. Michael Kopech (KOHY’-pehk) limited Tampa Bay to an unearned run and one hit over five innings.
— The Astros blanked the Mariners, 4-0 as Justin Verlander pitched three-hit ball over eight innings for his first win since July 2020. Martín Maldonado (mahr-TEEN’ mal-doh-NAH’-doh) provided offense with a two-run homer, his first hit of the season.
— Cristian Pache hit a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning and Sean Murphy also went deep in the Athletics’ first win in seven games against the Blue Jays, 7-5. Former A’s third baseman Matt Chapman and Zack Collins homered on consecutive pitches in the sixth as the Blue Jays erased a 5-2 deficit.
— The Red Sox beat the Twins, 4-0 as Alex Verdugo (vur-DOO’-goh) and Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrts) each hit two-run home runs. Tanner Houck held Minnesota to a pair of hits and three walks while striking out four over five-plus innings.
— Josh Donaldson hit his first home run since joining the Yankees, a tiebreaking two-run shot in a four-run fifth that lifted New York to a 5-2 victory at Baltimore. JP Sears came earned his first career win, working out of a fifth-inning jam by retiring Ramón Urías on a flyout with the bases loaded.
— Hunter Dozier’s tiebreaking, two-run homer carried the Royals past the Tigers, 3-1. Kansas City starter Kris Bubic departed after 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks.
— Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) was 2 for 5 with a two-run homer, three RBIs, and three runs scored in the Angels’ 7-2 win at Texas. Noah Syndergaard (SIHN’-dur-gahrd) is 2-0 since signing with Los Angeles after allowing two runs and five hits over six innings.
