Blues lose to Hurricanes

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Andrei Svechnikov celebrated his 22nd birthday with two goals, Seth Jarvis also scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the St. Louis Blues 7-2. Antti Raanta won a battle of Finnish goalies with 30 saves. Ville Husso stopped 21 of 26 shots, and the Hurricanes scored two empty-net goals when Husso was pulled with 5:30 to play. Carolina is the No. 3 team in the league and improved to 44-15-7, good for 93 points, and first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Hurricanes had won just one of their past six games before the victory.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— The Boston Bruins have continued their month-long hot streak. David Pastrnak (PAHS’-tur-nahk) and Brad Marchand each had a goal and an assist while the Bruins scored four times in the second period of a 6-3 win against the Islanders. Erik Haula (HAH’-lah) and Jake DeBrusk each had a second-period goal after Craig Smith and Taylor Hall scored in the first for Boston. Linus Ullmark (LEE’-nuhs OOL’-mahrk) stopped 24 shots in the Bruins’ 14th win in 17 games. Boston captain Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES’ BEHR’-zhuh-rahn) appeared in his 1,200th NHL game after missing four straight with an elbow infection.

— Aleksander Barkov tied the game late in regulation before scoring the shootout winner to complete the Panthers’ comeback in a 4-3 triumph over the Senators. Anthony Duclair and Patric Hornqvist also scored for Florida, which erased a 3-0 deficit and extended its hold on the Eastern Conference lead. Newcomer Claude Giroux (juh-ROO’) had two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky (boh-BRAHF’-skee) made 19 saves.

— The Lightning ended a three-game skid with a 2-1 win versus the Red Wings in overtime. Brayden Point won it with a power-play goal 2:28 into the extra session, scoring off a rebound of a Steven Stamkos shot. Stamkos scored a third-period, power-play goal for the Lightning, tying it with 4:38 left in regulation.

— Jared Spurgeon scored on a give-and-go 1:24 into overtime to give the Wild a 3-2 win over the Blue Jackets. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 shots in his Minnesota debut to help his new team get its fifth win in a row. Kirill Kaprizov (kah-REEL’ kah-PREE’-zahv) scored twice, including a tying goal with 1:03 left in the third period.

— Jordan Spence scored his first NHL goal and captain Anze Kopitar (AHN’-zhay KOH’-pih-tahr) had a goal and an assist in the Kings’ 4-2 victory over the Kraken. Gabriel Vilardi scored his first goal in five months and Sean Durzi ended a 29-game goal drought for Los Angeles. Cal Petersen made 23 saves as the Kings solidified their hold on second place in the Pacific Division.

— Evgenii Dadonov (dah-DAH’-nahv) scored in overtime and the Golden Knights overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period for the first time in team history to beat the Blackhawks, 5-4. Vegas trailed 3-0 entering the third but got goals from Chandler Stephenson, William Karlsson, Jack Eichel (EYE’-kul), and Alex Pietrangelo (peh-TRAN’-jeh-loh). Dadonov scored for the second time in two games since his trade to the Ducks was nullified because of his no-trade clause.

— Johnny Gaudreau set a career high with five assists and the Flames beat the Oilers, 9-5. Matthew Tkachuk had two goals and two assists to help Calgary overcome Leon Draisaitl’s (DRY’-sy-tulz) hat trick. Elias Lindholm and Mikael Backlund each scored twice in the Flames’ 40th win.

— Paul Byron broke and scored a late third-period winner as the Canadiens grabbed a 4-2 victory over the Maple Leafs. Jake Allen made 49 saves and blanked the Leafs after Auston Matthews netted his league-leading 47th goal just 36 seconds into the game.

— Timo Meier had a hat trick and Marc-Edouard Vlasic added a goal as the Sharks dumped the Ducks, 4-1. James Reimer had 27 saves for San Jose, which sent Anaheim to its ninth straight loss.

— Elias (eh-LEE’-uhs) Petterson scored twice and Thatcher Demko handled 35 shots as the Canucks rallied past the Stars, 4-1. Bo Horvat added an empty-netter with 1:06 remaining and Conor Garland later scored on his own rebound.
